What is a sort code?
A sort code is a 6-digit number that identifies a bank and branch in the UK and Ireland. It is usually written as three pairs, e.g. 20-00-00. Together with the account number it routes domestic payments.

Is a sort code unique to one branch?
Sort codes are allocated per institution and branch. Some banks also use universal codes that apply bank-wide.
Do I need an IBAN for UK payments?
Domestic UK payments use sort code plus account number. For cross-border payments an IBAN is recommended — the UK IBAN embeds the sort code.
